Freeway Music Therapy

Music Therapy?

Music Therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program. It is an established health profession in which music is used within a therapeutic relationship to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of individuals. After assessing the strengths and needs of each client, the qualified music therapist provides the indicated treatment including creating, singing, moving to, and/or listening to music. Through musical involvement in the therapeutic context, clients’ abilities are strengthened and transferred to other areas of their lives. Music therapy also provides avenues for communication that can be helpful to those who find it difficult to express themselves in words. Research in music therapy supports its effectiveness in many areas such as: overall physical rehabilitation and facilitating movement, increasing people’s motivation to become engaged in their treatment, providing emotional support for clients and their families, and providing an outlet for expression of feelings. ~ American Music Therapy Association

Freeway Music Therapy

We reached out to Shelby Price, a recent Board-Certified Music Therapist, about starting a program at Freeway Music. She was thrilled to join forces with us.

About Shelby

Shelby is a board-certified music therapist who co-founded Freeway Music Therapy in 2018. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Music Therapy from Charleston Southern University and completed her 6-month internship at Palmetto Health Baptist. During her undergraduate and internship, she has worked with numerous populations including children & adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, older adults, and adults & adolescents in the psychiatric setting.

Shelby has a passion for music therapy, especially for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. She is proficient in guitar and piano but loves to use all kinds of instruments to make a music therapy session as fun as it can be. She is excited to start this new adventure and bring music therapy to Columbia!

About the Sessions

Shelby uses instruments such as drums, xylophones, shakers, and tambourines in her sessions. You can expect instrument play, singing, songwriting, drumming, improvisation, and musical games as part of the experience.

The sessions will begin in August at the Northeast location and hopefully branch out to all Freeway locations in the midlands. They are currently offered 7:30am-3:30pm. Shelby will be offering individual and group sessions. Individual sessions are $45/30 minute session and $70/60 minute session. Group sessions are $30/30 minute session and $55/60 minute session.
