Friday night Brave Baby kickoff a run of dates in their hometown of Charleston closing out a strong year that saw them release their excellent sophomore album Electric Friends. That tour rolls through Columbia and New Brookland Tavern on December 11, featuring a loaded bill that includes indie rockers ET Anderson and Dempsey.
Signed to Holy City record label Hearts & Plugs, Brave Baby’s name has risen steadily over the past five years, from their debut album Forty Bells to their new album Electric Friends their sound has grown and developed. Brave Baby thrives on grooves, decorated with blossoming keyboard parts and sneaky good guitar leads that carry their pop songs to another level. Vocally the band switches between guitarist and primary vocalist Keon Masters and drummer Ryan Zimmerman whose deeper baritone voice adds texture not only within songs, but within the overall album. Zimmerman is also the producer and recording engineer of not only both of the band’s albums, but also a slew of other South Carolina releases. A storage shed converted into a recording studio, Zimmerman’s space was the subject of controversy earlier this year after it was featured prominently in articles from the Post and Courier and Charleston City Paper. Zimmerman’s touch recording touch is golden though, easily noticeable are his techniques, but it’s his touch as a producer bringing songs and artists to another level where he truly excels.
Like most modern bands, Brave Baby look to make it through every avenue possible. You might have heard them whether you know it or not, whether it was in the background of a TV show, or in an Uggs commercial, their music goes through several avenues to make it to listeners. Be on the lookout for them in 2015 at festivals across the US.
